WILLIAM CARLETON
Signed sentiment of the Irish novelist, author of Traits and
Stories of the Irish Peasantry. Extremely rare!
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours truly/W.J.Carleton", in
black ink, 3x1¾ attached to 5x3 card (2 surfaces). William Carleton's
(1794-1869) Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry depicts
the lifestyle of the stereotypical Irish "Paddy" through a series of fictional
and biographical sketches. Published first in 1830, it is considered his
greatest achievement. Featured stories such as "Phil Purcel The Pig
Driver" and "Tubber Derg" expose the Irish's socioeconomic
self-degeneration, as well as its crippling dependency on the Catholic Church.
His sentiments, judged highly controversial at the time, can be considered a
precursor to the writings of W.B. Yeats and James Joyce. 3x1¾ attached to 5x3
card (2 surfaces). Toned. Creased. Pencil notes and ink notes at affixed card.
Otherwise, fine condition.
