WILLIAM CLARK Unsigned document from U. S. Treasurer William Clark in 1829. It accompanied $300 sent to Henry Burbeck, a veteran of key Revolutionary War battles. From Burbeck's papers. Document unsigned. 1 page, 7¾x9¾, docketed on verso. March 27, 1829. Addressed to Mr. H. Burbeck. In full: "SIR, Enclosed you will find my draft no. 444- on the Branch of the Bank of the United States, at Hartford for Dollars,300 - the amount of Warrant, No. 1975- issued by the Secretary of the Treasury, on receipt whereof be pleased to favor me with an early acknowledgement, specifying the sum received. With due consideration, I am, Sir, your obedient servant, WILLIAM CLARK, Treasurer of the United States". This letter is from the papers of HENRY BURBECK (1754-1848), a veteran of key battles of the Revolutionary War. He was chief of the Artillery Corps when he received these orders. Promoted to Brigadier General, he commanded the Connecticut State Militia during the War of 1812. WILLIAM CLARK (1774-1851) was a county judge in Pennsylvania (1803-1818) and Pennsylvania state treasurer (1821-1827) before serving as Treasurer of the United States (1828-1829). He was also elected U. S. Representative for Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District (1833-1837). Lightly toned and creased. Show-through from docket and discoloration on verso. Light tears at right edge. Torn from larger sheet at left edge. Ink transference. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
