WILLIAM D. COOLIDGE. Scarce Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Danny Franklin with best regards/from W.D. Coolidge - Mar. 21, 1969". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 4½x6¾ (one surface). Stamped on verso: "Research Publication Services/This photograph is the property of/GENERAL ELECTRIC RESEARCH LABORATORY/and may not be reproduced without permission. Dated in ink (unknown hand): "9-16-'55". Coolidge, who joined the General Electric Research Laboratory in 1905, remained with General Electric over his entire career. He was made Director of the General Research Laboratory in 1932 and was named General Electric Vice President and Director of Research in 1940. American engineer and physical chemist William David Coolidge (1873-1975) invented and made applications of ductile tungsten (1908), invented a revolutionary new tube for the production of X-rays (1916) and devised portable X-ray units and high power X-ray units for cancer treatment. In 1975, Coolidge was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. He died later that year at age 101. Scarce signature. Lightly creased at blank margins and corners, minor crease underlines the "Co" of Coolidge. Minor surface creases and scratches on image, some touch facial image. Ink and pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
