WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS
William Dean Howells signs an autograph letter fragment.
Autograph Letter Fragment signed: "W.D. Howells", front and
verso, 4¼x1½. On stationery of "The Atlantic Monthly" magazine. Boston, 1881
July 17. "To Dear Mrs. Bruce". Fragment clipped from a longer letter
in Howells' hand. Fragment in full: ..."1st of March, and Mr. Aldrich.
Yours sincerely" and on verso: "I like the four ... it seems to me
in places"... . In 1860, William Dean Howells (1837-1920) published a
campaign biography, Life of Lincoln, and was rewarded by being
named U.S. Consul in Venice, Italy (1861-1865). As editor of the "Atlantic
Monthly" (1871-1881), Howells espoused realism over romanticism in literature
and promoted such writers as Mark Twain, Henry James, Bret Harte, Emily
Dickinson and Stephen Crane. His own work included poetry, criticism and
several novels, the best known of which was The Rise of Silas Lapham
(1875). His later books examined social issues such as race relations and
the condition of labor and of women. Slightly soiled. Mounting tape remnant
touches date on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
