WILLIAM D. HOWELLS
Signature from the Lincoln biographer
Signature: "W.D. Howells", 3¾x2½ card. In 1860, Willaim
Dean Howells (1837-1920) published a campaign biography, Life of
Lincoln, and was rewarded by being named U.S. Consul in Venice, Italy
(1861-1865). As editor of the "Atlantic Monthly" (1871-1881), Howells
espoused realism over romanticism in literature and promoted such writers as
Mark Twain, Henry James, Bret Harte, Emily Dickinson and Stephen Crane. His
own work included poetry, criticism and several novels, the best known of which
was The Rise of Silas Lapham (1875). His later books examined
social issues such as race relations and the condition of labor and of women.
