Price: $90.00
WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS. Signature: "W.D. Howells", 3½x2¼,
affixed to 8½x11 page with ink and pencil captions (unknown hand). In 1860,
HOWELLS (1837-1920) published a campaign biography, Life of
Lincoln, and was rewarded by being named U.S. Consul in Venice, Italy
(1861-1865). As editor of the "Atlantic Monthly" (1871-1881), Howells
espoused realism over romanticism in literature and promoted such writers as
Mark Twain, Henry James, Bret Harte, Emily Dickinson and Stephen Crane. His
own work included poetry, criticism and several novels, the best known of which
was The Rise of Silas Lapham (1875). His later books examined
social issues such as race relations and the condition of labor and of women.
Lightly toned. Mounting adhesive shows through at lower edge. File holes and
pencil note in left margin of mounting page. Otherwise, fine
condition.
