Printed card signed in ink: "William D. Mitchell", in blue ink, 3½x2½. Card reads: "I am pleased to furnish you my autograph for your collection. [Signature] Attorney General". WILLIAM D. MITCHELL (1874-1955), an infantry officer in the Spanish-American War and World War I and a prominent lawyer based in St Paul, was Solicitor General Under President Coolidge (1925-1929). The Solicitor General represents the US Government in Supreme Court cases. As the third ranking official of the Department of Justice, the Solicitor General can act as Attorney General when the latter and the Deputy Attorney General are absent. Mitchell would soon acquire the full title of Attorney General under President Hoover (1929-1933). He was chief counsel to the Congressional committee investigating the military disaster at Pearl Harbor. Duncan Lawrence Groner (1873-1957), appointed to the D.C. Court of Appeals in 1931, the year he wrote this letter, took senior status there in 1948. Toned. Large stain covering from left side to right margin. Paper remnants on verso.
