On his letterhead as Senior Vice President of the Weyerhaeuser Company to Toni Currin, Dillon, South Carolina. In full: "Many thanks for your kind remarks. In answer to your question, I did enjoy very much serving in the capacity of Director and Deputy Attorney General. Being a public servant is a responsibility that challenges and demands your best effort at all times. My best wishes to you very a prosperous and Happy New Year. Sincerely". Between 1969 and 1973, William Doyle Ruckelshaus (b. 1932), previously an Indiana state legislator, held several important posts in the Nixon administration: Assistant Attorney General, first Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, acting Director of the FBI, and then Deputy Attorney General. In the famous "Saturday Night Massacre" of October 1973, Attorney General Elliot Richardson resigned, and his deputy Ruckelshaus was fired, rather than comply with President Nixon's demand that special Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox be fired. Ruckelshaus then moved to the private sector with Weyerhaeuser, the world's largest pulp and paper company, and other corporations. President Reagan called him back to government at interim head of the EPA in 1983. In recent decades, Ruckelshaus has served on many corporate and university boards while accepting special assignments from Presidents and Governors of both parties. Normal mailing folds.
