Letter on White House stationery as Correspondence Secretary to
President Truman, a post in which he had also served FDR.
Typed Letter signed: "William D. Hassett" as Secretary to
the President, 1 page, 6¼x9¼. Washington, D. C., 1948 May 14. On
White House letterhead to Mrs. M. Irene Lynch, Croton-on-Hudson, New York. In
full: "The President deeply appreciates your friendliness in sending him
that card of greetings on his birthday. He asks me to express his sincere thanks
for your very kind thought of him. Very sincerely yours". William David
Hassett (1880-1965) was a reporter for the Washington Post and Associated
Press before joining the White House staff in 1935. From 1942 to 1952, he held
the official title of Correspondence Secretary to Presidents Roosevelt and
Truman. He published a memoir, Off the Record: With FDR 1942-1945, in
1958. He also wrote a history of his home town of Northfield, Vermont. Normal
mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
