Black and white publicity photograph from the 1936 film The
Wedding Present
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Terry-/Wm Demarest/Made in 1936". B/w, 10x8. Publicity photo
for the film The Wedding Present. Known for his gravelly voice and
cold-fish stare, Demarest (1892-1983) had begun his movie career in 1926 in
When the Wife's Away. The following year, he appeared in The Jazz
Singer with Al Jolson; he would later receive an Oscar nomination for
Best Actor for his role as Jolson's fictional mentor, Steve Martin, in 1946's
The Jolson Story. Demarest continued making films until 1975,
although he became increasingly busy with television work. Beginning in 1965,
he assumed one of the roles with which he would become most associated: "Uncle
Charley" on the TV sitcom, My Three Sons (1965-1972). Lightly creased
at corners. Studio stamps and ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine
condition.
