WILLIAM E. “BILL” BROCK III
The United States Senator signed this typed letter and sent it to a fellow
government employee
Typed Letter Signed: “Bill” in blue ink on an 8x10½ sheet of paper. One page.
Dated August 4, 1972. Letterhead is from the United States Senate's Committee
on Government Operations, which oversees spending on government activities
like the Census, the United States Postal Service, and the National Archives. In
Part: “Of course, I knew that you were leaving and while I am sure / you are
excited about getting back home, we will miss you / around here”. Bill Brock (b.
1930) represented Tennessee in the United States House of Representatives
(1963-1971) and Senate (1971-1977). In his winning Senate race, he beat
country singer Tex Ritter in the Republican primary and then upset 3-term
Senator Albert Gore, Sr. in the general election. He lost his bid for re-election,
but went on to hold other political posts: UnitedStates Trade Representative
(1981-1985) and Secretary of Labor under President Ronald Reagan
(1985-1987). Brock resigned from the Cabinet to manage Senator Bob Dole's
1988 Presidential campaign. Brock was accused of financial mismanagement and
Dole's campaign was unsuccessful. Mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
