WILLIAM ELLERY CHANNING
William E. Channing, a leader in early 19th Century Unitarianism,
wrote this undated invitation an acquaintance: "it will give me much pleasure
to hear & see you".
Autograph letter signed "Wm E Channing". 1 page, 4¾x7¾, 1
sheet folded. Addressed by Channing to "Mr Minot, Becaon St" on verso.
In full: "My dear Mr Minot - If you are disengaged this evening, it
will give me much pleasure to hear & see you. Mr [illegible] &
Mary have gone to the concert & taken Jane with them. Very
truly". Pastor of the Federal Street Church in Boston from 1803 until his
death in 1842, Channing (1780-1842) was an organizer of the American
Unitarian Association (1825), becoming known as the "apostle of Unitarianism."
One of the foremost Unitarian theologians of his time, Channing was also
one of the most important Unitarian preachers of the early nineteenth century
and known for his articulate and passionate sermons and speeches. He tended
to avoid esoteric points of doctrine in favor of preaching morality, charity and
Christian responsibility so, not surprisingly, he also became a leading figure
in American movements to end slavery and poverty and promote temperance and
peace. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Pin or staple holes at top edge.
Bottom edge is irregular. Random ink stains. Folded twice and unfolded.
