Typed Letter signed: "Bill" as Secretary of the Treasury, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1974 September 23. On letterhead of The Secretary of the Treasury and addressed to Mr. David Rockefeller, Chairman of the Board, The Manhattan Chase Bank, New York, New York. In full: " Dear David: I regret that it is now impossible for Carol and me to attend the luncheon which you are hosting at Pocantico Hills in Tarrytown, New York on Saturday, October 5, in honor of the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors. I have to attend a meeting at Camp David that weekend which prevents our attending. I am sorry it worked out this way as I was looking forward to being with you. With kindest regards. Sincerely," William Edward Simon (1927-2000) was Secretary of the Treasury from 1974-1977, serving under Presidents Nixon and Ford. Previously Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (1973-1974), Simon was an astute businessman both before and after his public service, serving on the boards of over 30 prestigious companies. He was also a long-time member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, serving as Treasurer from 1977-1981 and as President during the 1984 Olympic Games. In recognition of his efforts, Simon was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1991. His son, Bill, was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor in California in 2002. David Rockefeller, Sr. (b. 1915) was CEO of Chase Manhattan Bank from 1961 to 1980. Normal mailing fold. Staple holes at top left. Lightly creased. Ink note (unknown hand) at top right.
