First day cover of Viking missions to Mars signed by space shuttle astronaut
First Day Cover signed "Wm Thornton". 6½x3½. FDC Viking missions to Mars with cachet on left of orbiter and lander and "Saluting United States Unmanned Space Accomplishments", Hampton, VA, July 20, 1978, one 15¢ "Viking missions to Mars" stamp attached, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. With wax paper sleeve with writing in an unknown hand. Thornton, born in 1929, is a former American astronaut. He completed training as a United States Air Force flight surgeon in 1964 before NASA selected him as a science astronaut in 1967. He's been mission specialist on two space shuttle missions: STS-8 in 1983 and STS-51B in 1985. But his greatest contributions may come from his work on the ground. He studied muscle loss and mass in space, a important discovery in the development of long-duration space flights, and has since developed equipment and procedures to combat this. He retired from NASA in 1994 and is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University or Texas Medical Branch in Galveston Texas and an adjunct professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Lightly toned and soiled, otherwise in fine condition.
