WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY
Typed letter to fellow author Barnaby Conrad, written in Spanish and
English, anxiously awaiting the arrival of a box. Accompanied by original
envelope addressed in Buckley's hand.
Typed Letter signed: "B", 1 page, 8½x11. New York, N.Y.,
2003 July 31. To "Dear Barnaby" [Conrad], beginning in Spanish,
switching to English: Spanish segment, loosely translated: "With so
much pleasure I bought your box, the master of style Van Dyck. I am very anxious
to have it, and wait every moment for its arrival." Switching to English:
"It was great having Barn. Jr. there, but no substitute for the old man.
XXB" Accompanied by autograph envelope addressed by Buckley to
Barnaby Conrad in Carpinteria, California, postmarked Grand Central Station, NY,
July 31, 2003, and bearing Buckley's printed return address. William F.
Buckley, Jr. (1925-2008) a conservative political pundit
(before it was fashionable to be one) and authority on language style,
founded National Review magazine (1955). He was the long-time host of the
TV interview program Firing Line (1966-1999). Buckley is also the author
of a series of novels starring C.I.A. agent Blackford Oakes. American author
Barnaby Conrad founded the Santa Barbara Writers' Conference and led
through 2004. Conrad would have known Spanish well, having spent much time in
Spain as a bullfighter as well as an author. Multiple mailing folds. Creased.
