Typed Letter signed: "Bill" in red ink, 1 page, 8½x11. New York, N.Y., 1998 December 29. On letterhead of the National Review to Barnaby Conrad, Carpinteria, California. In full: "Dear Barnaby: When I am established at Buckley College, would you agree to having your Writer's Conference in my quarters? I promise to be very hospitable. With warm regards," William F. Buckley, Jr. (1925-2008, born in New York City) was a conservative political pundit and authority on language style, founded National Review magazine (1955). He was the long-time host of the TV interview program Firing Line (1966-1999). Buckley is also the author of a series of novels starring C.I.A. agent Blackford Oakes. American author Barnaby Conrad founded the Santa Barbara Writers' Conference and led through 2004, the year of this letter. The Christo of the letter is William Buckley's son, Christopher Buckley, now a columnist and author of several satirical novels. He was obliged to resign from the staff of the National Review after writing a 2008 column (not in the Review) titled, "Sorry, Dad, I'm Voting for Obama!" Lightly creased. Normal mailing folds.
