WILLIAM F. HAVEMEYER
The thrice elected New York City Mayor adds a short sentiment to his signature, dated in 1873--the year he entered his final term in office.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Yours respectfully /W. F. Havemeyer/Mayor/New York April 1973", 3¼x2 card. William F. Havemeyer (1804-1874) served as the Mayor of New York in three separate terms, first from 1845-1846, then 1848-1849 and lastly from 1873-1874. Born and raised in New York City, Havemeyer was the son of sugar refinery owner William Havemeyer Sr., and worked as a clerk in his father's service in town. With degrees from Columbia University and Wykoff Village Academy, Havemeyer formed a partnership in 1828 with his cousin Frederick Christian Havemeyer under the name W.F.& F.C. Havemeyer, sugar refiners. He retired from the business early in 1842. After entering politics, Havemeyer went on to become the president of the Bank of North America and of the New York Savings Bank. He was a large stockholder of the Pennsylvania Coal Company and Long Island Rail Road. A well-trusted businessman, Havemeyer was called to Vice Presidency over the Committee of 70 which was the political reform organization established in the wake of the infamous Boss Tweed scandal. He gave a famous speech against Boss Tweed and his Tammany Hall associates at Cooper Union in 1871, which is remembered as one of the most outspoken denunciation against thieves in the Nation's history. Havemeyer died in office in 1874. Toned. Small smudged near "N" of New York. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
