Slip of paper signed by the U.S. Senator from California and his first wife
Signatures: “William F. Knowland/ California” and “Helen Knowland/ California” 9¼x1½.
WILLIAM F. KNOWLAND (1908-1974) represented California in the U.S. Senate from
1945-1959. The Republican was Senate Majority Leader (1953-1955) and Minority Leader
(1955-1959). Knowland was twice considered for the Republican Vice-Presidential
nomination in 1952: once by Senator Robert Taft, Dwight Eisenhower's principal rival for
the nomination; and again by Eisenhower himself, when it appeared that the "Checkers"
scandal might require that Richard Nixon be dropped from the ticket. Although their policy
views were similar, Knowland and Nixon, rivals for leadership of the Republican Party in
California, detested each other. Knowland lost the gubernatorial race in 1958. HELEN
KNOWLAND (1907-1981), formerly Helen Davis Herrick, was married to Knowland in
1926 on New Year's Eve. They divorced in 1972, their estrangement in part caused by
Knowland's affairs. Final remaining signer merits further research. Toned. Right edge
irregular from being torn from album. Otherwise, fine condition.
