WILLIAM F. KNOWLAND
Photograph of the U.S. Senator that he inscribed to a fan
Inscribed Photograph Signed: "To Norma Schulman/ With my best regards/ William F.
Knowland/ July 6, 1970". B/w, 10x8. William F. Knowland (1908-1974) represented
California in the U.S. Senate from 1945-1959. The Republican was Senate Majority Leader
(1953-1955) and Minority Leader (1955-1959). Knowland was twice considered for the
Republican Vice-Presidential nomination in 1952: once by Senator Robert Taft, Dwight
Eisenhower's principal rival for the nomination; and again by Eisenhower himself, when it
appeared that the "Checkers" scandal might require that Richard Nixon be dropped from the
ticket. Although their policy views were similar, Knowland and Nixon, rivals for
leadership of the Republican Party in California, detested each other. Knowland lost a race
for Governor in 1958. Gently bowed. Corners and edges somewhat worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
