WILLIAM F. KNOWLAND
The U.S. Senator responds to a letter and petition for the Refugee
Relief of 1953, saying the issue will have his "further consideration". The act,
which allowed 214,000 immigrants into the United States, expired in 1956. It is
assumed the petition was to prolong it or reenact it
Typed letter signed: "William F. Knowland", in black ink, 1
page, 8x10½. February 10, 1956. United States Senate. In full: "Dear
Mr. Weinbaum: Your letter of January 18h as been received and I greatly
appreciate your forwarding to me a copy of the petition signed by my
constituents requesting an amendment of the Refugee Relief of 1953, as amended.
I am glad to have your views on this matter and you may be assured your comments
will have my further consideration. With best regards, I remain Sincerely
yours". William F. Knowland (1908-1974) represented California in the
U.S. Senate from 1945-1959. The Republican was Senate Majority Leader
(1953-1955) and Minority Leader (1955-1959). Knowland was twice
considered for the Republican Vice-Presidential nomination in 1952: once by
Senator Robert Taft, Dwight Eisenhower's principal rival for the nomination; and
again by Eisenhower himself, when it appeared that the "Checkers" scandal might
require that Richard Nixon be dropped from the ticket. Although their policy
views were similar, Knowland and Nixon, rivals for leadership of the Republican
Party in California, detested each other. Knowland lost a race for Governor
in 1958. He committed suicide in 1974. Normal mailing folds. Light surface
creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Toned. Otherwise, fine
condition.
