WILLIAM F. KNOWLAND
Brief typed letter on US Senate stationery
Typed Letter signed: "William F. Knowland" as US Senator, 8x10½ page, affixed at an 8½x11 page. Washington, D.C., 1945 November 14. On letterhead of the Senate Committee on Commerce to Captain Ralph E. Ward, Army Medical Center, Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. In full: "In reply to your letter of November 13th I am pleased to let you have my autograph. Sincerely yours". Affixed to the letter are printed photos of Knowland and of Will Rogers, Jr., twice Knowland's Democratic opponent for the US Senate seat. WILLIAM FIFE KNOWLAND (1908-1974) represented California in the U.S. Senate from 1945-1959. The Republican was Senate Majority Leader (1953-1955) and Minority Leader (1955-1959). Knowland was twice considered for the Republican Vice-Presidential nomination in 1952: once by Senator Robert Taft, Dwight Eisenhower's principal rival for the nomination; and again by Eisenhower himself, when it appeared that the "Checkers" scandal might require that Richard Nixon be dropped from the ticket. Although their policy views were similar, Knowland and Nixon, rivals for leadership of the Republican Party in California, detested each other. Knowland lost a race for Governor in 1958. He committed suicide in 1974. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Newspaper clipping affixed at letter. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
