The pilot and flight commander of the French Aviation Service signs this 2½x3 photograph
Photograph signed: "William F. Loomis" in blue ink. 2½x3. William F. Loomis was an engineer and pilot in France during World War I. After graduating from Amherst College in 1917 he went to France to become an ambulance service volunteer and then a French Aviation Service volunteer. After the United States entered the war, he transferred to the 94th Squadron. Later he was named flight commander of the 213th Pursuit Squadron of the 3d Pursuit Group and awarded the Croix de Guerre. After the war, Loomis worked for the United Aircraft Corporation from 1934 to 1959. Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Four pin-sized holes in upper left corner. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
