WILLIAM F. WHITING
As Secretary of Commerce, he signs a cryptic, typed 1928 letter to the
Postmaster General.
Typed Letter signed: "William F. Whiting" as Secretary of
Commerce, 1 page,6¾x9. Washington, D.C., 1928 December 20. On
official letterhead to Harry S. New, Postmaster General, Washington, D.C. In
full: "I want to thank you for the interest you have taken in the matter
of which I spoke to you recently. My secretary has told me of the message you
gave him yesterday, and I am sure that what you have done will prove to be very
helpful. With the Season's greetings, I am Sincerely yours". William
Fairfield Whiting (1864-1936), formerly President of Whiting Paper
Company, founded by his father, was Secretary of Commerce from August 22,
1928 to March 4, 1929. Appointed to replace Herbert Hoover, when the latter
received the Republican Presidential nomination, he remained in office for
the remainder of President Coolidge's term. Harry S. New, previously a Senator
from Indiana (1917-1923), was Postmaster General under Presidents Harding and
Coolidge. The curiously vague content of this letter may whet the reader's
interest. Were these two Cabinet officers discussing something they didn't want
to commit to writing? Further research might be warranted. File holes at upper
blank margin. Received stamp at upper right. Pencil check mark at upper middle.
Fold crease not near signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
