WILLIAM FLYNT "BILL" NICHOLS
The Member of Congress from Alabama discusses the needed educational programing in Alabama, signs name in black ink
Typed letter signed: "Bill Nichols" in black ink. 1 page, 8x10½. Written on personal U.S. House of Representatives letterhead. Washington, D.C. January 22, 1975. Addressed to Mr. Herman R. Goldberg, Associate Commissioner for Equal Education Opportunity in the Office of Education. In full: "It has come to my attention that a group from Region 4 has requested a meeting with you on January 22nd to discuss possible losses of ESAA money in the Southeastern part of the United States. Although we have progressed tremendously in the south in meeting the demands place on our school systems by the courts and by HEW we are still face problems in some areas that these funds are needed to help solve. I would urge you and your staff at HEW to give serious consideration to the arguments which will be presented by the delegation from Region 4 for retaining ESAA program in the South. Sincerely". William Flynt "Bill" Nichols (1918-1988) was a U.S. Representative from Alabama who served from 1967 until his death in office in 1988. His political career began with an eight-year period in both houses of the Alabama Legislature, he was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1959 and the state Senate in 1963. A strong supporter of famed segragationalist, Alabama Governor George Wallace, Nichols was elected to office in 1966 for the first of what would be eleven terms. He is best remembered for co-authoring the Goldwater-Nichols Act alongside Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, which enacted the far-reaching reorganization of the U.S. Department of Defense command structure. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners rounded. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
