The Governor of Illinois sends a letter congratulating friends on
their fiftieth wedding anniversary.
Typed Letter signed: "William G. Stratton" Governor of
Illinois, 1 page, 8¼x10½. Springfield, Illinois, 1954 June 24. On
Office of The Governor letterhead addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Albert Lohff,
Freeport, Illinois. In full: "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Lohff: I understand
that you will observe your fiftieth wedding anniversary next Sunday, June 27th.
Mrs. Stratton and I are happy to extend our congratulations and our best wishes
for the future. I hope this note finds you both in good health and that your
Golden Anniversary will be a happy one. Sincerely yours," William Grant Stratton
(1914-2001), a veteran of WWII, was a Republican U.S. Representative from
Illinois (1941-1943, 1947-1949), Illinois State Treasurer (1943-1945,
1951-1953) and Governor of Illinois (1953-1961). During his tenure,
Stratton was instrumental in the modernization of the state's roadway system and
the development and construction of O'Hare International Airport.
Stratton, who was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in
1952, 1956, 1960 and 1976, had also been a candidate for Secretary of State
of Michigan (1948) and for the Republican nomination for Vice
President (1960).Following his political career he was Vice
President at the Canteen Corporation, Vice President of Associated Bank, and was
a board member of the Dartnell Corporation. Normal mailing folds. Lightly
