Autograph Note signed: "William Gardner Bell", 1 page, 5½x3¼ paper. In full: "For Charles Scribner III,/with kind regards and/best wishes,/Sincerely,". William Gardner Bell (b. 1912) is a historian known for his writings on military history and Western Americana. Commissioned during World War II at the US Army Cavalry School, Fort Riley, he served in combat in North Africa and Italy, winning a Bronze Star and two Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war he edited the Cavalry Journal, which became Armor Magazine, and was worked in the Army's Military Histories program before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Bell is equally well known for his histories of the American West, and he has an extensive collection of Western art. He also had a radio program on WNYC, New York, devoted to the history of jazz. Charles Scribner III, a member of the publishing family, is a prolific writer in the field of art history. Fine condition.
