Typed Letter Signed: “William Gavin”. 4½x7. One page. Dated November 1, 1943.
Letterhead from his office in Whitehall, which he used during WWII. In Full: “Thank you for
your letter. I was sorry to have to be so abrupt when you called but I was in the midst of a very
important conference. Alas, the days you refer to seem very far away but I am glad to hear of your
success in the seven-mile walk. I always felt that I should much rather walk than run!”. Sir
William Gavin (1886-1968) was an agricultural expert who served in various positions for
the British government and in business. He maintained a farm of 5,000 acres until WWI,
when he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves. In 1917, he earned his first
government position with the Ministry of Agriculture. Over ten years later, he became a
consultant with the Imperial Chemical Industries company. They wished to understand the
perspective of a farmer, and his many years of experience before and after WWI cultivating his
farm was essential in his duties. At the onset of WWII, Gavin was named the Chief
Agricultural Adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture. Lightly toned. Note along bottom in
unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
