WILLIAM GEORGE SPENCER CAVENDISH, 6th DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE
The closing of a letter sent to an associate, signed "most truly sincerely" as the Duke of Devonshire
Autograph fragment signed: "my dear Sir/most truly sincerely yrs/Devonshire", 4½x2½, affixed to 6½x7¼ sheet. The affixed sheet bears several clippings, with an unsigned letter in an unknown hand on the verso. William George Spencer Cavendish (1798-1858) inherited his father's title, eight stately homes, and 200,000 acres of land, becoming the Sixth Duke of Devonshire in 1811. A reform-minded Whig politician, he supported Catholic emancipation, the abolition of slavery, and reduced hours of factory labor. He carried the Orb at the coronation of King George IV and represented the United Kingdom at the coronation of Russian Czar Nicholas I (1826). He served twice as Lord Chamberlain of the Household (1827-1828, 1830-1834). Deafness curtailed what had promised to be an even more influential political career. Very interested in agriculture, he was President of the Royal Horticultural Society (1838), and developed the Cavendish banana, now among the most common varieties worldwide. Distraught when the love of his life, Lady Caroline Ponsonby, married William Lamb (the future Prime Minister Lord Melbourne), he never married or had children, though he had several mistresses. (Lady Caroline had a much publicized affair with the poet Byron). Crease running through right margin of signature. Slight surface creases. Binding holes on affixed sheet. Creased on affixed sheet. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
