To "Dear Dr. Bowers", in full: "Greetings, and I am interested in teaching here in New York City - either Adult Classes, at night, which I'd prefer or, if there are no such opportunities, any other. Is there a chance you might be able to use me, and could you please write to me at this address? Perhaps we could meet and talk about such possibilities. It would be fine to see you again, and I still remember our meeting over Radio a few years back as a very lively and stimulating time. I've a novel coming out at Random House in late July, and am at work on another long and tough one. As you remember, I believe, I have taught in Universities before, hold a Master of Arts Degree in Literature, and I'd enjoy teaching along with my work. Do please let me hear, and any help you can give would be so much appreciated. Best wishes and respects". William Goyen (1915-1983) began writing his first novel, The House of Breath (1950), while serving on a carrier in the South Pacific in World War II. He would ultimately publish four novels, as well as many short stories and two plays. He also wrote the screenplay and some songs for the Paul Newman film The Left Handed Gun (1958). While praised by many critics and popular in Europe, Goyen's works were not commercially successful in the United States, so he supplemented his income as a magazine editor and college professor. His 1955 quest for a teaching job proved successful, landing him a position at New York's New School for Social Research. He later taught at Columbia, Princeton, University of Houston, and Brown. He was married from 1963 until his death to actress Doris Roberts (mother of the title character on Everybody Loves Raymond). Normal mailing folds. Creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
