Hampton, Chairman, Board of the Markham Memorial Association, Staten Island, New York". In Full: "I thank you for the kind invitation you extend me to attend a dinner on April 23rd, at which time the importance of emphasizing the broader vision of the message of a great American poet, Edwin Markham, and the great need for his brotherhood ideals in the world today. I am in hearty accord with the purpose of the dinner and of those who will be present. I regret, however, because of an engagement which I made to attend a Southwestern Conference of representatives of the American Federation of Labor at Dallas, Texas, on the date named, it will be impossible for me to be present. I am truly sorry for the reason herein stated that I can not, therefore, accept the very kind invitation you sent me. Very sincerely yours, ". A coal miner for 20 years, William Green (1873-1952) rose through the ranks of the United Mine Workers and the American Federation of Labor, succeeding AFL President Samuel Gompers in 1924. Serving until his death in 1952, Green advocated union/management cooperation and supported pegging wage increases to productivity increases, an unusual position for a labor leader. Earlier, as an Ohio State Senator, Green had secured passage of a model Workmen's Compensation Act (1911). Lightly creased and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
