Typed letter of introduction for a striking union leader, signed as President of the American Federation of Labor (1936)
TLS: "Wm Green" as President, American Federation of Labor, 1 page, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., 1936 October 13. On letterhead of the American Federation of Labor "To Whom It May Concern". Letter of introduction for "Mr. James Sells, Business Representative of Fruit and Vegetable Workers Union #18211 of Salinas, California These striking members of Fruit and Vegetable Workers Union #18211 are in need of assistance. They have been on strike since September 4th. Brother Sells is the duly accredited representative of this local organization. I urge you to extend to these strikers all financial and moral assistance possible. Fraternally yours". A coal miner for 20 years, William Green (1873-1952) rose through the ranks of the United Mine Workers and the American Federation of Labor, succeeding AFL President Samuel Gompers in 1924. Serving until his death in 1952, Green advocated union/management cooperation and supported pegging wage increases to productivity increases, an unusual position for a labor leader. Earlier, as an Ohio State Senator, Green had secured passage of a model Workmen's Compensation Act (1911). Lightly creased and soiled. Shaded at margins, paperclip rust stain at upper edge touches logo.
