Magazine cover signed "W. G. Skelly" in green ink. B/w, 44 pages including covers, 9x12, bound with 2 staples. Dec. 1930 edition of the trade magazine Airports. Skelly (1878-1957) worked his way up from a $2.50-a-day job as a tool dresser in the Pennsylvania oil fields in the late 19th Century to become one of the largest independent producers of oil in the United States. He organized the Midland Refining Company, which began production in 1917 and incorporated as Skelly Oil Company in 1919 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. By 1923, Skelly Oil was the leading marketer of oil and gasoline in the Midwest, with 471 bulk and service stations, over 4,000 franchise dealers and sales representation in 11 states by the 1930s. Skelly lost control of the company to J. Paul Getty in the 1930s, and his company was merged into Getty Oil in 1977, with his Skelly gas stations rebranded to Getty. The Oklahoma legislature passed a resolution in 1955 praising Skelly as Tulsa's greatest asset. Lightly toned and creased. Small stain touches signature. Covers are lightly scuffed.
