Signature: "Wm H. Avery/Kansas" in blue ink. 3½x2 card. Avery (1911-2009) was Governor of Kansas from 1965 to 1967. During that time, he sanctioned the executions of Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, the murderers of a Kansas farm family who were immortalized in Truman Capote's book In Cold Blood. Avery, a Republican, had previously served in the Kansas State House of Representatives (1951-1955) and as a U.S. Representative from Kansas (1955-1965). An unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. Senate from the state, Avery later worked with oil industry firms. Fine condition.
