Written on official Congressional letterhead. Addressed to "Mr. Joseph P. Kelley/ Washington, D.C.". "Dear Joe" In full: "This will acknowledge receipt of the cordial invitation to attend the New Jersey State Society's Christmas Party and Dance to be held at the Wardman Park Hotel on December 16. I exceedingly regret that it will be impossible for Mrs. Sutphin and I to attend, but I want you to know that we are thinking about you and want to extend to you to the members of the New Jersey State Society the Season's Greetings. With kind regards, I am Sincerely yours". William Halstead Sutphin (1887-1972) was a Democratic congressman who represented New Jersey's 3rd district for over a decade (1931-1943). Before his time in the U.S. House, he served in the Army and was stationed at the U.S.-Mexico border. During the First World War, Sutphin was sent overseas and functioned as a captain in the Air Service. Following his tenure in public office, he was named vice president of the M.J. Merkin Paint Co., located in New York City. Lightly toned. Corners and edges gently worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
