WILLIAM HAMMERSTEIN
$1.35 meal ticket from the Paramount Continental Cafe, signed by William Hammerstein in 1952. A Broadway producer and director, William Hammerstein was the eldest son of Oscar Hammerstein II.
Meal ticket signed "Wm Hammerstein" in lead pencil. Lead pencil and blue ink notations in unknown hand and purple ink date stamp. 3½x5½, perforated top edge. April 4, 1952. Meal ticket from the Paramount Cafe for $1.35. William Hammerstein (1918-2001), the eldest son of Oscar Hammerstein II, was possibly in Hollywood for the 1953 film, Main Street to Broadway, a behind-the-scenes look at the 1953 theatrical scene. The film featured a number of Broadway personalities, including Ethel and Lionel Barrymore, Helen Hayes, Joshua Logan and Richard Rodgers and Hammerstein (the duo made up a "instant song" in the film, with Rodgers on the piano and Hammerstein supplying vocals). William, who is not on the film's list of credits, was a Broadway producer and director who produced Neil Simon's first play, Come Blow Your Horn, and Garson Kanin's A Gift of Time and directed musicals and plays in London (including the 1956 London premier of Fanny) as well as New York. Also the producer of the U.S. National Tour of Oklahoma!, William's television credits include the production of The Bell Telephone Hour, The Arthur Godfrey Show and a number of specials. Lightly toned and creased. Adhesive residue in bottom right corner (does not touch signature). Torn from binding at top edge with missing top corners. Staple holes at top edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
