New Zealand-born William Hayward Pickering (1910-2004) was director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1954-1976. He played a key role in launching America's first satellite into orbit (Explorer 1, 1958), achieved the first fly-by of another planet, Venus (Mariner 2, 1962) and obtained the first close-up pictures of Mars (Mariner 4, 1965). Creased and worn. Multiple mailing folds. Notches at left and right edges. Corners worn. Adhesive residue near left bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
