Signature: "Lewisham" 2¾x1 affixed to a 3x9¼ sheet of paper that also contains several biographical clippings and images. From his 1853 to 1891, he was styled as Viscount Lewisham, and he signs this piece with that title.William Heneage Legge, Earl of Dartmouth VI (1851-1936) was a member of the British Peerage affiliated with the Conservative party. In 1868, Legge was commissioned an ensign in the 27th Staffordshire Rifle Volunteer Corps. Then, in 1874, he was promoted from lieutenant to captain. Next, Legge was promoted to major in the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment. During his younger years, Legge played first class cricket for Marylebone Cricket Club (circa 1877). In 1878, he began functioning as a Member of Parliament. He held his parliamentary seat until 1891, at that time succeeding his father's title.Also in 1891, he was named Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire. He took on various other responsibilities, becoming an Alderman of the Staffordshire County Council and a Justice of the Peace for Staffordshire and Shropshire. In addition, he was appointed a member of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts in 1901. Beginning in 1891, Lord Dartmouth became an honorary Colonel of the 5th volunteer battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment. From 1908 to 1928, he was also an honorary Colonel of the 46th North Midland Divisional Train of the Royal Army Service Corps. Slip of paper containing signature is toned and its corners have been clipped. Sheet of paper to which signature and other clippings have been affixed is irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
