Typed Letter signed: "William Henry Chamberlain", 1 page, 8½x11. Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1967 November 10. Written to "Dear Ben Mandel", in full: "I regret very much that I cannot be present at the ceremony honoring you for your long and distinguished service to the important cause of national security. Those of us who have a special knowledge of communism are especially qualified to recognize how uniquely capable and devoted that service was. I offer congratu-lations on the past and best wishes for the future." Born in Brooklyn, New York, William Henry Chamberlain (1897-1969) was an author, historian and journalist. As a young man, Chamberlain worked as a Moscow correspondent for the Christian Science Moniter. Initially a Marxist and Communist sympathizer, he changed his views after his long stay in the country, witnessing famines being produced by forced collectivization there. After his time in Russia, Chamberlain worked in Germany and Japan, strengthening his opposition to collectivism and absolutism. A prolific author who was outspoken in his opposition to Communism, his works include The Russian Revolution (1935), Collectivism: A False Utopia (1937), The Russian Enigma (1943), America's Second Crusade (1962), Appeasement: Road to War (1962) and Beyond Containment (1983). Benjamin Mandel (1887-1973), worked as a Director of Research for the House Un-American Activities Committee. Normal mailing fold. Lightly toned at top edge. Lightly creased.
