WILLIAM HERBERT
He blames a seating problem on poor management, and complains of his heavy schedule: rehearsing one play while performing another
Autograph Letter signed: "Wm Herbert", 3 pages (integral leaf), 4½x7. 1 Carlisle Place, Victoria St. S. W. [London], Sunday 28th, no date. To "Dear Miss Ayrton", in full: "I was so glad you had your seats all right yesterday week. I sent your note to Miss Grahame - (I was so annoyed! - and she told me she sent you two stalls. Some extraordinary mismanagement in the front, I fancy. I am so sorry to hear you have nothing in prospect at present. It is really too bad. Please remember what I said to you, that if at any time I can be of any help to you, you may count on me - Not that my poor services can be much good! I am nearly dead with work - rehearsals every day at the Shatfesbury and playing every night at the Comique. I finish there on Friday night - and open at the Shaftesbury on Wednesday the 8th. I shall hope to have the pleasure of calling on you after that date, if I may. Believe me, with every good wish, Yours sincerely". English actor William Herbert (1844-1896) maintained a heavy acting schedule, as this letter attests. He was seen often at London's Opera Comique, appearing there as Ernest Vane in Masks and Faces (1888). Foxing present. Corners lightly worn. Minor surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
