The Harvard electrical engineer sends letter to friend, explaining his summer plans, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Will" in black ink. 4 pages integral leaf, 4½x7 folded, 7x9 flat. Perkins Hall, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. June 22, 1895. In full: "My dear Deta:- Your letter received this morning. I was surprised to see how patient you could be when you tried - indeed, the endurance thereof was great - This has been an extremely warm day, and I followed my "summer card" diligently. By the way, you said you would like to make some changes in it. Remember this schedule is not for the entire summer but only as long as I stay here, which will be until after "Class Day" which is Friday the 21st. I expect to leave Saturday the 22nd - will take the Boston & Albany home as the Fall River Line Steamer leaves to early Friday night for me to catch. Of course, I will have to alter that "Summer Card" somewhat when I reach home - will probably think less and smoke less, although I am not so sure about the latter. However any suggestions you may offer will be greatly appreciated - That account of Mr. Lawrence was really very sad. Especially so, since he was a Harvard man. Indeed, a very sad thing happened here last week one of my acquaintances died from a self-inflicted blow; he blew out the gas about 3 in the morning. Sad - yes, yes sad, very, very sad - Will have to close as the fellows are waiting for me to go with them to the Glee-Club Concert - Sincerely". William H. Radcliffe (b. 1873) graduated from Harvard University in May 1896, and worked as an electrical engineer and professor. Radcliffe wrote Telephone Instruments, Their Operation, Arrangement and Management in 1913 and Home Study Course in Practical Electricity in 1916. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Light surface creases.
