WILLIAM HOBART ROYCE
This letter written and signed by the poet and Balzac expert is asking the recipient to attend an upcoming dinner as well as thanking him for information
Autograph letter signed: "William Hobart Royce" in black ink. 8x12½. New York, March 16, 1948. To "Dear Mr. Tenenbaum", in part: "Thank you very much for your kindness in sending me Dr. Spire's address, and for the bibliographical information on your writing concerning Balzac. I shall enter them in the manuscript of the Supplement to my Balzac Bibliography. [...] I hope that you will seriously entertain and follow up my suggestion that you write a comprehensive study on the subject: 'The Jew in Balzac's Human Comedy." [...] I trust you will attend the Blazac Dinner on April 3, and meet many of the members. May I call upon you to make a short speech on that occasion? Fraternally yours". William Hobart Royce (1878-1963) was an American writer and bookseller who was an expert on French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac. Royce published poetry under his given name as well as his pen-name, Willie Penmore. In 1917 Royce met Gabriel Wells and joined his bookselling firm where he stayed for over 30 years. The shop became a center for the sale of all types of "Balzaciana". Royce lived his life in emulation of Balzac and was the founder (1940) and president of the Balzac Society of America. In 1935, he was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor and was made an honorary citizen of Issoudun, where Balzac's La Rabouilleuse was set. Some of Royce's notable works include "Remember Pearl Harbor!", "The Bookman's Lament", and "Balzac Was Right, A Sonnet Sequence". Toned. Corners rounded. Normal mailing folds. Original mailing envelope included. Otherwise, fine condition.
