WILLIAM HOBART ROYCE
The Balzac expert and poet signs this handwritten letter on a post
card thanking the recipient for sending him a book, dated 1949
Autograph letter signed: "Royce" in black ink. 5½x3½ postcard.
Brooklyn, New York, July 9, 1949, on personal cardstock to Dr. Shea Tenenbaum.
In full: "Dear Friend,- Many thanks for your kindness in sending me
your book and the Balzac articles. My only regret is my inability to read them,
and that is something no doctor can cure. Have you seen our great friend, Mr.
Leo Weitz, recently? He spoke very highly of you, and I heartily agreed with
him. Fraternally yours". William Hobart Royce (1878-1963) was an
American writer and bookseller who was an expert on French novelist and
playwright Honoré de Balzac. Royce published poetry under his given name as
well as his pen-name, Willie Penmore. In 1917 Royce met Gabriel Wells and joined
his bookselling firm where he stayed for over 30 years. The shop became a center
for the sale of all types of "Balzaciana". Royce lived his life in emulation of
Balzac and was the founder (1940) and president of the Balzac Society of
America. In 1935, he was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor and
was made an honorary citizen of Issoudun, where Balzac's La Rabouilleuse was
set. Some of Royce's notable works include "Remember Pearl Harbor!", "The
Bookman's Lament", and "Balzac Was Right, A Sonnet Sequence". Toned and
lightly stained. Corners rounded. 1c stamp affixed. Otherwise, fine
condition.
