Inscribed signatures: "William Holden" and, on verso, "To Teddy/Jane Darwell" in blue ink. Blue ink and lead pencil notations on front and verso in unknown hand. 5¼x2 with rounded right edges. Nominated three times for Academy Awards for Best Actor, HOLDEN (1918-1981, born William Franklin Beedle, Jr. in O'Fallon, Illinois) won the 1954 Oscar for the role of J.J. Sefton in Stalag 17. He was also nominated in 1951 for portraying Joe Gillis in Sunset Blvd. and in 1977 for the role of network news division President Mark Schumacher in Network. Other memorable roles were the boxer/violinist in Golden Boy and Judy Holliday's tutor in Born Yesterday. DARWELL (1879-1967) started her acting career on the stage before moving to movies in 1913. In all, she had a total of over 200 movies and TV shows to his credit, along with four Broadway appearances. She specialized in motherly roles, especially in Shirley Temple movies, or as indomitable women. One of these roles, as Ma Joad in the film adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath (1940), earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Disney fans may recognize her as the Bird Woman in Mary Poppins (1964), her last movie appearance. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Neatly torn from album at left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
