Typed Letter signed: “Bill Scherle”, in black ink, 1p, 8x10½. Congressional Letterhead (William J. Scherle/ 7th District, Iowa). To “Dear Mr. Voegler”. Schuyler, Nebraska (original printed franked envelope included). In full: “Just a brief note to let your know that we forwarded your letter of July 11th to your new Congressman [sic], the Honorable Charles Throne, as a matter of Congressional courtesy./ Our office staff for this summer is complete. However, we are hopeful that Congressman Throne may be able to assist you in your search for summer employment./ Thank you again for writing./ With best wishes,/ Sincerely”. William Joseph Scherle (1923-2003) was a Republican politician who represented Iowa in the U.S. House from 1967 to 1975. Scherle served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. He continued his military service as a reservist with the U.S. Navy from 1947 to 1954. Scherle attended Southern Methodist University (1945-1947). After graduating, he became a grain and livestock farmer. From 1956 until 1964, he was the chair of the Mills County Republican Central committee. First a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives (1960-1966), Scherle went on to be elected to the 90th Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses. After his political career ended, Scherle worked as a deputy administrator at United States Department of Agriculture (1975-1977). He was also president of a consulting firm in Washington, D.C. from 1977 to 1987. Faint scuffing toward left edge on front and bottom edge of verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
