This card is signed with a note by the writer, songwriter and stage
performer
Autograph note signed: "I am yours/by large majority/W.J.
Florence/January 1 1886" in black ink. 4½x3½. William Jermyn Conlin
(1831-1891) better known by his stage name William J. Florence, was
an American actor, songwriter, and playwright. His wife, Malvina Pray, often
performed with him. From Malvina's observation of wealthy American on vacation
abroad, Florence asked Benjamin Edward Woolf to write "The Mighty
Dollar", a show that the couple would perform over 2,500 times during the
mid-1870s and well into the 1880s. Florence was one of a select number of
Americans to win the ribbon of the French Societé Histoire Dramatique. He
was also co-founder with Walter M. Fleming of the Shriners, a Masonic Order.
Toned. Darkening around edges. Some blurring of writing. Ink note (unknown hand)
on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
