WILLIAM J. FLORENCE and MALVINA PRAY FLORENCE
The acting couple pen quotations on opposite sides of a sheet
Autograph Quotations signed: "You can take the governor's/word for it'/W. J. Florence/N. York/Feby 23 [18]85", 7½x4½. Also signed on verso: "No! How strange!/It has been published/for years and years/Malvina Pray Florence". WILLIAM J. FLORENCE was the stage name - and eventually the legal name - of actor, songwriter and playwright William Jermyn Conlin (1831-1891), a name taken from the city of Florence, Italy, of which he was fond. Working to support his widowed mother, Florence began doing dialect impersonations on stage in 1850. His first big success was in A Row at the Lyceum (1851). In 1853, he married actress and dancer MALVINA PRAY (1830-1906), and the two were usually paired thereafter on stage. With the aid of Benjamin Edward Woolf, the acting couple wrote The Mighty Dollar, a spoof on wealthy Americans abroad which they performed over 2,500 times in the 1870s and 1880s. Desirous of organizing fellow Masons into a fraternity dedicated to fellowship and fun, Conlin co-founded the Shriners in 1870. Frayed at left edge from binding. Tear and notch at top right edge. Lightly toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
