In full: "On my return after a short absence I have your letter of May 11 inviting me to become a member of the Committee on Arrangements for the dedication of the Fountain of the Sea Horses, the gift of the Italian Nation to the American Nation, upon the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. I appreciate the honor that has been shown me in this invitation and am glad to accept. I only regret that I shall be unable to be present at the dedication ceremonies. If I can be of service in any way, please let me know. My acceptance of your invitation was verified by telephone this morning; I am sorry that the unavoidable delay in replying caused you inconvenience. Believe me, Sincerely yours."
