All 8 signers on one side of this sheet were prominent members of the Dartmouth faculty and administration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included are two Presidents of the institution (Tucker and Hopkins).

There are 27 signers on verso, yet to be identified but probably meriting further research. None of these persons have listed an affiliation with Dartmouth. Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, originally chartered by King George III in 1769, was at first intended for the education of American Indian youth. Today, Dartmouth is an Ivy League institution, home to 4,100 undergraduate and 1,700 graduate students. The Dartmouth College Case of 1819, argued before the US Supreme Court by alumnus Daniel Webster, set a landmark precedent of private colleges' autonomy from legislative interference. WILLIAM JEWETT TUCKER (1839-1926), himself a Dartmouth graduate, was President of the College from 1893-1909. During his tenure, Dartmouth built 20 new buildings, nearly tripled the size of its faculty, and nearly quadrupled the size of the student body (from around 300 to over 1,100). Tucker also promoted a broader curriculum and improved the institution's finances. A Unitarian minister, Tucker had previously taught at Amherst and at Andover Theological Seminary. CHARLES F. EMERSON (1843-1922) entered Dartmouth as a student in 1865 and retired in 1913 after 20 years as Dean of Academic Faculty. He was a Professor of Natural Philosophy and Mathematics, and also taught astronomy. JOHN K. LORD, a professor at Dartmouth, co-authored A History of Dartmouth College (1891). He presided over the centennial observance of Daniel Webster's graduation from Dartmouth. He was a President of the New England College Entrance Certification Board. SAMUEL PENNIMAN LEEDS was Pastor of Dartmouth College Church for 40 years (1860-1900). He has signed here as Pastor Emeritus. A collection of his sermons, dedicated to President Tucker, was published in 1908. WILLIAM LYONS PHELPS (1865-1943) taught English at Yale for 41 years, but he did have some connections with Dartmouth. An essay by Phelps, "Some Makers of American Literature," was published under the auspices of the Dartmouth Alumni Lectureships, and as a youth Phelps had walked from Yale to Dartmouth, a journey of several weeks. LEONARD B. McWHOOD (b. 1870), a member of Dartmouth's Music Department, composed "The Hymn of Nations" (1933), intended as an international anthem. ERNEST MARTIN HOPKINS (1877-1964), a 1901 graduate, was President of Dartmouth from 1916-1929. He aroused controversy in 1922 with a statement that "Too many men are going to college," and that colleges could not afford to disperse their resources among so many. CHARLES P. CHASE (d. 1923), a Dartmouth graduate in 1869 and subsequently a banker, became Treasurer of the College in 1890. Lightly toned. Otherwise fine condition.
