WILLIAM K. VANDERBILT and CHAUNCEY DEPEW
First mortgage bond for the newly created Pine Creek Railway Company.
Bond signed: "WK Vanderbilt" and "Chauncey M Depew" as Trustees, 1p, 15x9¾. Philadelphia, 1885 March 20. Pine Creek Railway Company (formerly the Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railway Company) first mortgage bond with $1,000 principal, due in 1932 at six percent interest, payable in June and December. Certificate No. 3161, issued to "C.L. Rossiter or assigns". Countersigned: "Wm Howell" as Secretary and "Henry Sherwood" as President. On verso is a printed document signed by the Presidents and Secretaries of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company and the Corning Cowanesque and Antrim Railway Company. At right, the bond has been transferred to seven different entities. The first is an April 1885 transfer to William H. Vanderbilt, the father of WILLIAM KISSAM VANDERBILT. William K., the grandson of family patriarch "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt, inherited his position from his father, but more than doubled his fortune in eight years through his own hard work. CHAUNCEY DEPEW, an attorney and former Secretary of State of New York and later U.S. Senator, was appointed President of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Co. the year he signed this document. He served until 1889 and later became Chairman of its Board of Directors. Lightly creased. Cancellation holes touch the "a" and "i" of Vanderbilt's signature and the "Ch", "y" and "w" of Depew's signature. ½-inch separation at mid-right blank edge, lightly chipped at top edge. Overall, fine condition.
