WILLIAM L. BIRCH (DOOLITTLE RAIDER)
Signature: "The Doolittle Raid Against Japan 4-18-42/William L. Birch/S-Sgt Bombardier/Crew #11", 5x3 card. Led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, 80 men on 16 B-25 bombers took off from the carrier USS Hornet on April 18, 1942. The raid, which marked the first time fully loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo, Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Staff Sgt. William L. Birch (1917-2006) of the 89th Recon Squadron was Bombardier of the five-man crew of the 11th plane. The crew's target was an oil refinery and storage area in Yokohama. Plane #11 inadvertently flew over an active enemy air base, and ten minutes later came under attack from four fighters, shooting down one of them. The crew successfully bailed out over China, all surviving the flight. Fine condition.
